Dear all,
since you are getting close to going to Orvieto, we wish to give some advice on how to get there from Rome (Fiumicino) International Airport, where most of you will land.
Most convenient and cheap way of reaching the congress site is by train, and we recommend you to go to the site : http://www.trenitalia.com/
for selecting your best available train from the airport. If you like, you can pre-buy tickets on-line, printing them at home. There is no real risk on "not getting on board" of trains for possible shortage of seats, and normally on these trains there is no seat reservation. However, it may useful to avoid staying in a sometimes long queue at the airport train station by on-line purchase of tickets.
If you cannot / do not wish to pre-buy tickets, once at the airport of Fiumicino Train Station, you can either buy tickets at the counters, or use the "ticket machines" near the train platforms, paying by credit card or cash.
After passing customs, you will find indications for the train station, which is within 10 min walking.
There are two possible option of traveling to Orvieto by train, in both cases you need to change train in Rome.
1ST is Direct Train "Leonardo" from FCO airport to Rome Termini station (35 min journey). Frothe Leonardo track, it takes approx. 5 min walk (inside the station) to get to the other train platforms. Make sure to identify your train from Rome Termini by departure time, and number (e.g. the 10:36 Intercity 588), because trains will not indicate Orvieto as their final destination (could be Florence, Milano, or other main cities north of Rome). Orvieto may be the 2nd - to - 4th intermediate stops. Usual journey is slightly more than 1 hour. These are the most comfortable trains for you to choose.
2ND is Local train from FCO airport to Rome Stazione Tiburtina, located in a different part of Rome. Journey is approx 50 min, 10 stops. Once in Tiburtina Station, find the track of your next train stopping in Orvieto (as above, remember time and number of the train). The most distant track is less than 5 min walk from where you stop.
Those coming from the North (for instance, landing in Florence) will need to get trains towards Rome, making sure they stop in Orvieto.
PLEASE, DO NOT BOARD ON "EUROSTAR TRAINS", BECAUSE THEY ARE ROME-FLORENCE "NO STOP", hence will not take you to Orvieto. BOARD ONLY ON REGIONALE or INTERCITY TRAINS.
Once you are in Orvieto (Scalo) station, you will exit the station and find - just across the street - the entrance to the "Funicolare", 1.30€ or so, every 10 min, working until 20:30. This takes you on top of the Orvieto rock, periphery of the town. Exiting the upper Funicolare station you will find a minibus to the center of town taking you to the Duomo di Orvieto or to the Quartiere Medievale (pick the one closest to your hotel). Both are 300 mt from Piazza del Popolo where the congress site is located. Orvieto is quite small, and those who wish to walk from the Funicolare upper station to Piazza del Popolo can easily do so (<15 min).
If arriving in Orvieto station too late for the Funicolare (after the last 20:30 ride), you can find taxis outside the station or call taxis at:
p.zza Matteotti, 15 – Orvieto Scalo
tel. +39 0763/301903
p.zza della Repubblica – Orvieto
tel. +39 0763/342613
GIULIO MONCELSI
tel. +39 360/433057 (also night-time)
WE REMIND YOU THAT THERE IS NO TRANSPORTATION ORGANIZED BY THE CONGRESS, from either airports or train stations.
Therefore, everyone needs to get its own arrangements.
Going from FCO airport to Orvieto would cost a fortune!
If arriving too late in FCO Rome airport, you may rather choose to sleep in Rome one night, and easily reach Orvieto on the next day. Connections FCO - Rome ends after 11:27. If a taxi is needed they SHOULD CHARGE YOU NO MORE THAN 55€ to Rome downtown ... if asking lot more .... call the police (would be wise to ask how much the ride may cost ... in advance, and refuse if they appear to be too smart .... DO NOT BELIEVE people offering you rides inside the airport, or pretending to be taxi-drivers. Official taxis can only be taken outside of the airport, in the specific lanes, and are controlled.
